I wrote this post a few days ago on my Brazilian blog and wanted to share it here as well. You can read the original here.
Today I asked ChatGPT which programming languages it masters the most. The response was a short and direct list:
- Python
- JavaScript/TypeScript
- PHP
- Go (Golang)
- C/C++
I’ll admit this made me think: in my view, PHP, JavaScript, and Python will continue dominating, and maybe even expanding their space, because of AI code generation. They’re accessible languages with enormous legacy and giant communities, which means any suggestion or piece of code generated by AI is already born with a ready-made ecosystem to support it.
The case of PHP is almost a living paradox: many people insist on saying it’s “dying”, but still dominates more than 40% of internet servers, largely thanks to WordPress. And if we think about it, the more AI generates quick solutions in PHP, the easier it will be to create and maintain websites… which, ironically, will make WordPress grow even more in this cycle.
In other words, the future might not be about the “new language that will kill all others”, but about the languages that are already deeply rooted and AI pushing them to get stronger. WordPress/PHP is the past, present, and the future.
