Some day I was talking to a friend about how many blogs I had in life, and that I have lost all of them mostly my fault but still, I miss my old posts even the early ones. I like to see how I evolved through the years, and the nostalgic taste of reading them is inebriating for me.
Still in this conversation we came across the same opinion when we realized creating content on social media is almost a waste of time since they own your content, so any kind of knowledge (if this is your thing) you generate will be lost and forgotten on the endless timeline of your profile.
Where I’m now
Facebook I don’t even sign in anymore (only bummers still there, I’m young, ok?), currently, I have an Instagram account where I do shit posting and interact with some friends but my main productive (totally unproductive) social network is my Twitter account which essentially loses everything I write after a few new tweets.
I also have accounts on Medium and DEV but both ends owe my content and to be honest, I have no interest in the relevance they do for the content created there.
The needs, the solution
What was looking for:
- Aggregate all my content and own that;
- Index the content;
- Automated backup;
- Have the ability to dump everything if this is my desire;
- Share the content on all damn social accounts I have;
- Have an on-top-of-the-web modern CMS.
The bullets above were my main concerns when I started creating a few self-hosted blogs that I eventually stopped maintaining, so I didn’t have plans to fall into this trap again. But things are interesting in life, a few months ago I joined Automattic the company behind wordpress.com and due to that I had to access my old WordPress account and voilà the solution for all my problems was always there and here we are now.
Expectations
I have to be transparent and say the obvious so you don’t think I’m totally an idiot, everything said here wasn’t the fault of any kind of structure or platform I chose, all was my laziness talking louder, all the time, but differently from the past if I had started here I would have all my old content even if I had decided to pause my writer momentum.
My plan here is to create a place to share knowledge and sometimes fun stuff because both are parts of me and perhaps some curious reader will like it and myself, older, have fun reading the mambo-jambo I’m writing now.
