It is very usual to hear people saying that it takes a lot of mathematical knowledge to work with programming and I can agree and disagree with that at the same time 🤷🏽♂️. Math in concept is essential for programming but also nowadays tools provide some sort of freedom. To create a simple web page that CRUD stuff you barely think about math. Countless libraries that just work. Let’s see:
Why did I get myself thinking about this specifically? Today I was watching this video:
And then I realized I suck at math 🤡 or at least my impostor syndrome makes me think like that.
The video describes how to make art using programming and shaders and all it shows are basic math operations so, why do I get upset? Even though they look basic the concepts behind each of them make me feel like I’m a big impostor that should be impeached to work in programming RIGHT NOW!
Let’s breathe a little bit and start over. After a few minutes, I realized that even if the math operation were basic the concepts were not so to know what/why they are there or doing something the watcher would need to spend some time learning each of them before trying to do anything by themselves.
How it applies to new programmers?
Often when I started coding I saw quite short functions that I struggled to understand what they were doing and it made me think that I should quit programming. At least for me is very difficult to process anything even if it’s looking simple if I’m not getting the concepts, I NEED TO KNOW WHY 😭.
I hope it helps you to think twice before giving up on programming because patience was the only thing that got me here today.
